The APGA Tour, which for 20 years has focused on providing pro playing opportunities for minority golfers, is widening its net with three new full-field tournaments that will be open to any men’s professional golfer. Longtime APGA sponsor Farmers Insurance is putting up purses of $33,000 for each 36-hole event. The change in approach, according to APGA leadership, is to broaden its reach while giving its tour members deeper levels of competition. The tournaments are at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, El Dorado Park in Long Beach and Cedar Crest in Dallas. The new tournaments bring the total events to 15 this year for the APGA, which offers some of the biggest purses in developmental golf. The total prize money for the upcoming Mastercard Tour Championship at Baltusrol is $100,000. For that one, only APGA members need apply.
