Brian Baldinger breaking down Cam Newton film is porn for Patriots fans

June 30, 2020

With every “(insert athlete) has tested positive for COVID-19” headline, it becomes increasingly less likely that all of these professional team sports make a return. God forbid there is a legitimate second wave and subsequent second lockdown, and I’m not sure when we’ll ever see another major sport that isn’t golf again.

I sincerely hope I’m wrong, because not being able to watch the NFL this season would be a travesty. Not only is it the NFL, which is good no matter what, but this year in particular is just loaded with fascinating storylines. Brady and Gronk on the Bucs, Phil Rivers on the Colts, Burrow on the Bengals and of course, Cam Newton on the New England Patriots, the latest and greatest storyline we don’t deserve.

You know who deserves it the least? Patriots fans, who have experienced nothing but success for the last two decades. Now, the very first minute they may have gone through some tough times, they get a former league MVP potentially at full health on a one-year, prove-it deal. If Newton is 80 percent of his 2015 self, the rest of the NFL should be absolutely terrified.

If Brian Baldinger’s latest “Baldy’s breakdown” is any indication, they should already be terrified. As Baldy points out, the Patriots implemented some quarterback runs while Jacoby Brissett was the starter for a handful of games in 2016. If offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels could get solid production out of Brissett, just imagine what he could get out of Cam:

If it were anybody else coming off a rash of injuries/surgeries, my Patriots-hating self would be among the "he's washed!" crowd. But I'm a huge Cam guy and I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm rooting for him in New England. I've been infatuated since that ridiculous season at Auburn, and would put him among the greatest football players I've ever seen. There'd be no better story than him winning Comeback POY in Foxboro in 2020, unless Brady takes the Bucs to the Super Bowl.
