    Cannonball!

Bryson DeChambeau reveals he had a pool party with the U.S. Open trophy on the Fourth of July

    July 16, 2024

Bryson DeChambeau arrives at Royal Troon this week seeking his second major of the summer. Should he manage to claim the Claret Jug on Sunday, he has pledged to let every fan in attendance touch it, sharing a little shred of golf glory with the world. That’s a big promise, but we’re inclined to believe him seeing how he's handled his second tenure with the U.S. Open trophy so far.

After his 72nd-hole triumph at Pinehurst back in June, DeChambeau raced around the 18th green, letting fans to put their fingerprints on his new piece of silverware. He then allowed Golf Channel stuntman Johnson Wagner to lift the trophy after Wagner replicated DeChambeau’s incredible bunker shot on live TV. He even shared the spoils with the studio audience on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

That wasn’t the end of DeChambeau’s populist approach to golf stardom, however. On Tuesday at Royal Troon, Wagner caught up with DeChambeau for a walk n’ talk, jokingly asking the U.S. Open champ how “our trophy” was doing. From the sound of things, pretty good, as DeChambeau revealed he spent the Fourth of July sipping wine from the chalice while at a pool party with his closest friends in Dallas. [The clip in question begins around the 1:08 mark].

We can't think of a better way to celebrate America's day than with America's trophy. The only question now is what DeChambeau will do with the Claret Jug should he win the Open Championship this week. Sip apres-ski cocktails out of it on Christmas in Aspen? Toast champagne on New Year’s Eve in NYC? The possibilities are seemingly endless, but let’s not get the cart before the horse. Bryson still has a lot of work to do if he wants to make these dreams a reality.
