Canceled flight prompts PGA Tour winner to make 20-hour(!) road trip to this week's event

July 24, 2024

After finishing runner-up at the British Open on Sunday, Billy Horschel declared he was still going to this week's 3M Open and that he'd "Be on the range 7:30 Tuesday morning grinding like I always am." Impressively, despite the close call and the long flight, Horschel stayed true to his word. However, he didn't have to put up with the travel ordeal that Wesley Bryan found himself in.

The 2017 RBC Heritage champ had flights booked to get him from last week's Barracuda Championship to the 3M, but he was one of the many, many people affected by airline cancelations caused by recent tech power outages. After successfully making his first leg from California to Salt Lake City, Bryan was informed his connecting flight to Minnesota would not be taking off. But it got worse.

After being informed he wouldn't be able to get there until Wednesday night—and it's probably a coin flip at this point whether that flight actually happens—Bryan had an idea to drive the rest of the way. Even though Google Maps was telling him it would take about full day.

Woof. But he convinced Ryan Brehm's caddie, Lee Chaney, to make the trek with him. Hey, you can't do a road trip like that alone. And a funny thing happened on the way to the Twin Cities. "We had a blast," Bryan told Golf Channel on Tuesday.

You can check out the Golf Channel interview here in which Bryan says the two "listened to a lot of shows" and stopped at "major landmarks" like the Corn Palace and the Wall Drug Store in South Dakota. Yes, his definition of "major landmarks" might be different than most. He also said the two enjoyed stopping at McDonald's and Hardee's. Yum.

“I’ll be honest, we had a great time," Bryan said. "That was about as much fun as I could have ever imagined. It helped not having wife and kids and trying to figure out to coordinate so, uh, two grown men in a car for 20 hours, we had a blast."

As someone who just spent 12 hours in a car with the wife and kids, I concur. Anyway, Bryan got there LATE on Monday night—and in economical fashion!

So after all that, Bryan wasn't out on the range as early as Horschel on Tuesday morning. But the most important part is that he's there before his Thursday tee time. And now he can say he's checked off a couple "major landmarks" to boot.
