Good putters adapt to conditions and respond to feedback. Measure your progress with this challenge drill. Going along the four axes of the compass, use sets of two pennies to make gates about a putterhead wide 15 feet from the hole. Now go back to 30 feet out and roll one putt toward the hole. The goal is to both make the ball go through the gate and make the putt—which will require the right combination of read, direction and speed. Grade yourself on success going through the gate, and where the putt ended up in relation to the hole. Did you have the right line? The right speed? Even if you miss, you're fine-tuning your error detection skills, which will make you a putter who gets better as a round progresses.
