They were playing for the Valero Texas Open title on Sunday at TPC San Antonio, but there was more on the line than a PGA Tour win and a prize money payout of $1.548 million.

Anybody interested in a last-minute trip to Augusta?

Of the top 20 players on the leader board after 54 holes in the Texas low country, only three were in next week’s Masters field. And J.J. Spaun wasn’t one of them. So in addition to closing out an improbable three-under 69 on Sunday (improbably thanks to an opening double bogey) to claim his first career tour victory, the 31-year-old will gladly be re-arranging his schedule for the next few days.

Spaun has played on the PGA Tour since the 2016-17 season but the last two seasons he’s finished outside the top 150 on the FedEx Cup Playoffs and needed to scramble in the Korn Ferry Tour finals to regain his card. A mis-diagnosis regarding the type of diabetes he suffers from caused troubles on and off the course.

This was Spaun’s 147th PGA Tour start, his best previous finish a runner-up at the 2017 RSM Classic. In 16 starts during the 2021-22 season, Spaun had made 12 cuts and had four top-25 finishes, including a T-7 at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship last fall.

The overall prize money payout this week is $8.6 million. Here are the paydays for each golfer who made the cut this week. Come back after the tournament and we’ll update with individual names and prize money earned.
