Players Championship 2023: How Scottie Scheffler’s insane eagle hole-out might cost him some cash

Scottie Scheffler is capable of some wizardry around the greens. We all remember his birdie hole-out on the third en route to winning last year’s Masters Tournament. But Scheffler is actually on an unbelievable pace of short-game magic so far in 2023.

That was on display on Saturday at the start of his third round at The Players. In the thick stuff to the left of the second green, Scheffler holed an unlikely pitch shot to put himself into the outright lead at 10-under after a birdie at the first hole, too.

Insane stuff. But it’s becoming a regularity for the young Texan. According to Golf Channel reporter and former caddie John Wood, that was the 10th hole-out for Scheffler … in 2023. And that’s going to cost him some cash, due to a bet he has with his caddie Ted Scott.

Apparently if Scheffler holes out 10 times in a year, his caddie wins a year-long bet they have. Well, the eagle pitch-in at TPC Sawgrass’ second hole apparently locked up that bet for Scott. Now Scheffler’s reaction makes a little more sense.

Scheffler, who won the WM Phoenix Open earlier this year, is in position for a second huge win of 2023, plus the winner's check of $4.5 million at the 2023 Players Championship. We have a feeling that will more than cover whatever bet him and his caddie have going.
