Rocket Mortgage Classic odds 2024: The 100-1 longshot bet our PGA pro loves

What just happened?
That’s what Tom Kim bettors—including two of us in our weekly Odds Drop video—were asking on Sunday afternoon. Minutes after Kim birdied the 72nd hole to force a playoff, PGA Tour officials moved the hole! Here we are trying to compete with the best golfer on the planet Scottie Scheffler, and protestors stormed the 18th green at the Travelers. The incident created damage and a decision was made to move the hole. Sigh.
The main reason why this incident cuts so deep, as we open the odds board for the Rocket Mortgage Classic, the betting favorite is none other than Tom Kim at 14-1! Kim ticket holders had 40s and 50s last week in a signature field. This shift in value based upon field strength is why our Odds Drop article is so valuable. Tom Kim was a “best value” on the board and now he is one of the worst.
Chris Powers, Steve Hennessey and I list our weekly picks in the below video. To summarize my perspective, I believe Cam Young is the worst value on the board. He was 100-1 last Monday. Don’t confuse worst value/bet for worst golfer. Young’s performance at the Travelers was historic. That being said, Detroit Golf Club presents a putting contest for the field of 156 and that is not Young’s strength. Believe it or not, he lost strokes putting on the back nine on Saturday (-0.19) during his 59.
Instead of Young, I’m grabbing another golfer on Monday and much farther down the betting board. SH Kim made the cut at the U.S. Open based largely on his ability to get the ball in the hole with his flatstick. The 2022 Korn Ferry Tour graduate finished ninth on the points list to earn his tour card. Kim competes well on driver/putter heavy birdiefests. Back in May, he finished fourth at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson.
Rocket Mortgage is a great week to grab a couple of longshot opportunities, and my week will begin by making this move before the operator’s read this article. See who else we like in the video below.
