Fans capture hilarious Rory McIlroy fail at the Road Hole from his recent round at St. Andrews

August 01, 2024

After it was revealed that Rory McIlroy had recently played a round at the Old Course at St. Andrews ahead of the Olympics in France, some social media critics questioned if another links golf round was proper preparation for Le Golf National. McIlroy quieted those doubters with a three-under 68 on Thursday in Paris, placing him just two shots outside of the top three in the Men's Golf Competition at the Olympics.

McIlroy later stated that it was "none of your business" why he was playing the Old Course right before heading to Paris, but it became everyone's business when a video of him yelling back at an American heckler found its way to the internet.

"I wasn't expecting quite the crowd on the last few holes that we got but yeah, it was good," McIlroy said. "That was the first game of golf I've had since Troon. I thought at least one game of golf before I got here was probably beneficial."

Turns out, he was right. It served as an ideal tune-up round, even if none of the shots he faced at St. Andrews were similar to the ones he's facing at Le Golf National. Kind of like the one he faced on the famous Road Hole, where McIlroy went long on his approach and saw his ball come to rest on the literal road. Naturally, fans were on hand to capture the shot on video, and that clip also made its way to the internet on Wednesday night. Can you say ... RELATABLE:

Relatable is an overused term when it comes to describing poor shots from tour pros, but it's quite fitting here. We'd all pull out putter if we found ourselves in this situation, and we'd all pop it straight up and have a laugh like McIlroy did here. Fortunately for McIlroy, this was just a nice casual round and this shot ultimately didn't matter. Unfortunately for McIlroy, he can't just have a nice casual round without the camera phones being out to capture every little moment from it.
