TROON, Scotland — Scottie Scheffler’s caddie Ted Scott was hurting on Friday at Royal Troon.

During early coverage of the British Open's second round, TV announcers relayed that Scott was feeling sick. Broadcast cameras later caught Scott at various points lying on the ground during Scheffler’s front nine, with Shane Lowry and Matt Fitzpatrick (playing in front of Scheffler’s group) at one point coming over to check on Scott’s health.

The Athletic’s Brody Miller captured some shots of Scott struggling early Friday morning.

Following his round, Scheffler confirmed that Scott was dealing with food poisoning.

"Well, could have been food poisoning, could be some sort of stomach bug," Scott said. "But he seemed to feel better as the day went on. The doc here took good care of him. But he did not sleep very much last night apparently. We didn't know if he was going to be able to go this morning, but he fought it out. You saw him laying down probably quite a bit out there, which was pretty funny.

"But it's just one of those deals, you're used to him being in one position, standing there by the bag, and then all of a sudden on No. 9 today he was literally sitting on the 10th tee for like 10 minutes while we were putting out over there. I didn't even see him, which was a bit unusual. He's a fighter. He did a good job today and battled through it."

It’s not the first time Scott has been a part of a major storyline this year. The veteran caddie missed the third round of the PGA Championship to attend the high-school graduation of his daughter, with Scheffler bringing in one of the PGA Tour’s chaplains to loop for the day at Valhalla. Scheffler—coming off the hoopla of his arrest the day before—struggled to a 73. Scott returned the following day, with Scheffler shooting a final-round 65 en route to a T-8 finish.

Scheffler and Scott have been together since late 2021, after Scott and longtime partner Bubba Watson split. Scott has been on the bag for all 12 of Scheffler’s PGA Tour victories.

Is it the British Open or the Open Championship? The name of the final men’s major of the golf season is a subject of continued discussion. The event’s official name, as explained in this op-ed by former R&A chairman Ian Pattinson, is the Open Championship. But since many United States golf fans continue to refer to it as the British Open, and search news around the event accordingly, Golf Digest continues to utilize both names in its coverage.
