At every PGA Tour event, including this month’s Memorial Tournament presented by Workday, thousands of volunteers are the often-overlooked lifeblood that make it all possible. Volunteers touch everything from crowd control to concessions and everything in between.

For presenting sponsor Workday, a leading provider of solutions to help organizations manage their people and money, the volunteer spirit extends well beyond the fairways of Muirfield Village Golf Club, site of the marquee annual golf tournament. While many Workday employees, known affectionately as “Workmates,” volunteer at the Jack Nicklaus-hosted tournament, their efforts have made an even bigger impact in their local communities. Giving back is one of the fundamental aspects of the company’s values.

“At Workday, our company’s purpose—to inspire a brighter work day for all—guides us to focus on doing our best in service of others,” said Aneel Bhusri, co-founder and executive chair, Workday. “Giving back is in our DNA. Through a wide variety of programs, Workday strives to support the causes our employees care about most, and we make it easy for employees to get involved and to reward the nonprofits closest to them.”

Since 2022, Workday employees logged more than 86,600 volunteer hours, resulting in more than $1.2 million donated to nonprofits, according to the company. One such area in which Workday volunteers have made a significant impact is with the Eat. Learn, Play. (E.L.P.) Foundation, which was founded by Stephen Curry, a four-time NBA champion and two-time MVP, and his wife, Ayesha, an entrepreneur and two-time New York Times bestselling author. Since 2022, dozens of Workmates from the company’s Pleasanton, California office have volunteered with the E.L.P. Foundation, getting their hands dirty painting murals, building benches and planter boxes, mixing concrete and assembling playground equipment at schools around Oakland, California. This year’s tournament marks the third year in which the E.L.P. Foundation will be the charity beneficiary.

“Stephen and Ayesha are amazing at what they do,” said Bhusri. “At Workday, we just feel lucky to be part of what they’re doing and to give the kids of Oakland a real chance at success.”

In 2023, E.L.P. sponsored six playground builds, and Workmates volunteered at all of them. Every time E.L.P. needs volunteers, Workmates show up in full force. In total, Workmates logged 45,000 volunteer hours, resulting in $1 million donated to nonprofits in 2023-24.

“It’s incredible to have the support we have from Workday,” Ayesha Curry said. “Their support has been so tremendous, and we really couldn't have done what we’ve been able to do without their help and dedication.”
