The Wyndham Championship might get plagued by weather, but in all the fuss over wave advantages and wind, do not lose sight of what is most important this week. The previous 10 winners have gained a combined 12 strokes (on average) versus the field with their flatstick and iron game. Sedgefield Country Club is a birdie battleground. Those same 10 champions averaged over 24 sub-par scores (birdie or better) en route to victory. In a race to 20-under par in Greensboro, you better have plenty of birdies packed along with a really good rainsuit.

Based upon the current forecast, the field of 156 FedEx Cup hopefuls probably will not even play on Thursday. It’s predicted that over five inches of rain will fall, along with strong wind. Once the storm somewhat subsides there will be soft conditions for the competition. This will turn the green surfaces into target practice. The proximity leaders on the PGA Tour will have a huge advantage. The largest gains on these Donald Ross-designed greens over the past decade come in the 10-15 foot range. Take the best approach players and filter for mid-range “makes” with the putter, and you have a good beginning to your betting card.

There’s a secret, if you only filter for the skills, you’re missing a major edge in scoring to see who can really separate.

Specific par scoring makes a huge difference. Sedgefield Country Club is a par-70 layout—with two less par 5s, and two more par 4s it favors certain players in the field. If you believe in course history, then this really makes sense. The final filter comes on the ground. Bermudagrass is a weed. It’s gnarly off the fairway, sticky around the green and grainy as a lagging YouTube video on the putting surface. Stick with the most important skills, and you will see a simple betting solution. The best approach player, with Bermuda putting on a par-70 course in the current field, is Lucas Glover.

Opened in 1926, Sedgefield Country Club is a Donald Ross design that has been the longtime host of the PGA Tour’s Wyndham Championship. The course co-hosted the inaugural Greater Greensboro Open (today’s Wyndham) in 1938, won by Sam Snead. The tournament has been played at several courses over the years, and Sedgefield has hosted since 2008. In 2007, the course underwent a $3 million restoration project aimed at transforming the layout back to Ross’ original intent. In typical Ross style, the greens are quite busy, with prominent slopes demanding the player stay below the hole.

Glover won the 2023 Wyndham Championship at 20-under par. You literally cannot make this up. By paying attention to the most specific skills needed to separate, you can build a profitable betting card. The next two players on that list are Eric Cole and Adam Svensson. I took Cole on Monday when the odds board opened at 70-1 (Monday Odds Drop). His number is now 55-1! Looks like we’re not the only ones who favor Cole’s chances…

The third name brings me to today’s play. I’m adding Adam Svensson to my Read the Line outright betting card at 100-1. The 2022 RSM Classic winner is excellent on Bermudagrass and gaining an average of four strokes tee to green over his past five starts. The Canadian is 82nd on the FEC points list, so he needs a winning week to make a serious playoff run. Opportunity happens when the course aligns perfectly with characteristics. Svensson is a ball-striking machine and in soft conditions has the skills needed to win at the Wyndham.
