Wyndham Championship will allow cell phones

July 27, 2010

Officials of next month's Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, N.C., announced that they will allow fans to bring cell phones, provided they're kept in silent mode and are used only in specific areas designated for their use.

Cell phones have been banned at tournaments for several years, the result of their ringing at inopportune times.

Tournament director Mark Brazil acknowledged that he isn't certain how well the lifting of the ban on cell phones will work, telling the Associated Press that the Wyndham is "kind of the guinea pig tournament."

Brazil said he expects the fans to behave accordingly.

A prediction: It won't get a ringing endorsement from the players.
