Celebrity charity golf tournaments typically have far more choppers than good players in their fields — think Charles Barkley — and their No. 1 goal generally is to not embarrass themselves.
Hence, this, the greatest name for such a tournament ever: The Joe Maddon Try Not to Suck Celebrity Golf Classic.
“I really think that all weekend golfers can understand the ‘Try not to Suck’ component,” Maddon, the quirky manager of the Chicago Cubs, said in an interview with Fox.
The tournament, scheduled for Monday at Bryn Mawr Country Club in Lincolnwood, Ill., will benefit Maddon’s Respect 90 Foundation charities.
The 90 in Respect 90, incidentally, represents the number of feet between home plate and first base, and respect is a reminder to run hard the entire way. He introduced the slogan, exhorting his players to play hard, when he took over the Cubs in 2015.
As for Try Not to Suck, that was what Maddon jokingly told center fielder Javier Baez when he arrived back with the Cubs in the summer of 2015. It has become a rallying cry for the Cubs this year.
