The first round of the U.S. Open finally ended Friday afternoon, with Andrew Landry maintaining a one-stroke lead over Dustin Johnson and Lee Westwood.
Landry holed a nine-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole at Oakmont Country Club early Friday morning to complete his round of four-under par 66. Johnson and Westwood followed with three-under par 67s. Jason Day, No. 1 in the World Ranking, opened with a six-over par 76, while Rory McIlroy, third in the world, shot a seven-over 77.
The afternoon wave scheduled to play Thursday, when a storm suspended play, played their first rounds on Friday, then were turning around and playing their second rounds in the afternoon.
Johnson, attempting to rebound from his 18th hole three-putt to lose to Jordan Spieth by a stroke at last year's U.S. Open, played a bogey-free round on a course that served up only 11 sub-par rounds in the first round.
Jordan Spieth began his title defense with a two-over 72, six shots off the lead.
“I felt like I played well,” said Spieth. “I felt like I didn’t quite get rewarded with my score for how I felt like I played. A couple of tough breaks. It’s a U.S. Open. Still in it.”
Phil Mickelson, needing a U.S. Open win to complete the career grand slam, shot a four-over 74.
Sergio Garcia, Shane Lowry and Scott Piercy all shot two-under 68s, while Bubba Watson and Henrik Stenson opened with 69s.
