History: Woman member of Royal and Ancient Golf Club wins club tourney

History was made in St. Andrews last week when Lady Angela Bonallack, among the first women admitted as members of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, won a club tournament.

Bonallack, a member of six Great Britain and Ireland Curtis Cup teams, recorded a net 71 (80-9) to win the club's May Monthly Medal on the New Course at St. Andrews.

Earlier in the week, Bonallack, wife of former R&A secretary Michael Bonallack, became the first woman to play in a match as a member of Royal And Ancient Golf Club. The R&A tied in a friendly match with the St. Andrews Links Trust staff on the New Course at St. Andrews.

Last September, 85 percent of the membership of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club voted in favor of admitting women members for the first time in its 260-year history.
