Scottie Scheffler wins Collegiate Showcase to earn spot in Genesis Open

Richard Heathcote

Scottie Scheffler is no stranger to playing with the big boys, qualifying for the U.S. Open twice along with appearances at the AT&T Byron Nelson and FedEx St. Jude Classic. Thanks to his performance on Monday, the All-American from Texas will receive another big-league start.

Scheffler, who earned Low Am honors at Erin Hills, turned in a three-under 68 at Riviera in Monday's Collegiate Showcase to earn an exemption into this week’s Genesis Open.

“It’ll be awesome to be a part of this field and to be a part of the history of this tournament is going to be really special,” Scheffler said. “I’m really looking forward to it.”

Sheffler bested a field featuring fellow Longhorns Doug Ghim (U.S. Amateur runner-up last year at Riviera) and Spencer Soosman, USC’s Justin Suh, Kentucky’s Lukas Euler and Washington’s Carl Yuan. Ghim, Soosman and Euler tied for second with 74s.

Scheffler, currently No. 38 in the amateur world rankings, was a part of the winning U.S. Walker Cup team at Los Angeles C.C. in the fall. He also won the 2013 U.S. Junior Amateur. His best finish on tour is a T-22 at the 2014 Nelson.

This is the fourth year of the Collegiate Showcase. Last year's winner, Pepperdine’s Sahith Theegala, made the Genesis cut and finished T-49.
