St. Jude: Berger leads Dustin Johnson, Mickelson by four

Daniel Berger shot a six-under 64 on Friday, boosting him to nine under through 36 holes. He leads Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson and Brooks Koepka by four strokes.

Daniel Berger shot the best score of the second round of the FedEx St. Jude Classic on Friday, firing a bogey-free six-under par 64 at TPC Southward in Memphis.

Berger, 23, seeking his first PGA Tour win, completed 36-holes in nine-under par 131, three strokes ahead of Tom Hoge and four ahead of Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson and Brooks Koepka.

“Everything was [working] when you don’t have a bogey and shoot 64,” said Berger. “I’m just excited to see what happens this weekend and get ready for [the U.S. Open] next week.”

Johnson, who trailed by a stroke after the first round, shot a one-under 69 on Friday. He trailed Berger by just a stroke after 16, but a bogey-double bogey finish left Johnson at five under through 36 holes .

Mickelson shot a five-under par 65 to play his way into contention.

Wesley Bryan played well in the second round of his first PGA Tour start, shooting a four-under 66. He is five shots back and tied for sixth.

The cut was one over, and among those who missed it were Ernie Els, Lee McCoy (in his professional debut), Graeme McDowell and Padraig Harrington.
