No disrespect to the Hawaii Swing, or The American Express, but the Farmers Insurance Open has historically always felt like the unofficial start of golf season. Part of that was due to the fact it was usually the first time we'd see Tiger Woods tee it up, but the other part was due to the iconic venue - Torrey Pines.
It's an indisputable fact that Torrey Pines, mainly the South Course, has a knack for producing legendary moments that remain ingrained in our brains forever. Tiger Woods' 2008 U.S. Open victory, Phil Mickelson making Bones pull the pin while he was in the 18th fairway, Jon Rahm's first PGA Tour win, Jon Rahm's first major championship (2021 U.S. Open), just to name a few. Whether it's a U.S. Open or a Farmers Insurance Open, the leader board is always stacked, and the cream always rises to the top. You can't argue that Torrey Pines isn't a proper test.
What you can debate about, however, is whether or not it's an interesting one. Golf Digest contributor/golf course architecture nerd Andy Lack joined us on The Loop podcast this week to discuss that very topic, and it's one he, like many other architecture aficionados, is very passionate about.
