U. of Maryland GC to host Nationwide Tour stop

Fred Funk, the most famous University of Maryland golf alumnus and a one-time Terps men's coach, helped fellow Maryland grad and Nationwide Tour commissioner__Bill Calfee__ announce today that the university's golf course will host the Melwood Prince George's County Open in 2010 and 2011. Next year's event is set for June 3-6 and Funk will serve as a honorary tournament chairman.

"This is an outstanding course," Funk said. "And I know the Nationwide Tour players will face a tough test of golf."

The school becomes the third university to host a Nationwide Tour stop, joining Ohio State and the University of Georgia.

"I have many fond memories of my days at Maryland and my participation on the golf team," Calfee said. "I know the university will be a wonderful host to the Nationwide Tour and its players next June. We hope to get as many members of the University community involved as possible as volunteers, spectators and sponsors in support of the Melwood Prince George's County Open."
