Watch a time-lapse video of St. Andrews' renovation of Hell Bunker

Because Scotland links lack the greenish shade of American courses, some may think golf maintenance is nonexistent there. Guess again.

St. Andrews' Old Course is host of this week's British Open, and also home to some of the more famous bunkers in the sport. That includes the sand pit of despair on the 14th hole known as "Hell Bunker."

The bunker is iconic and infamous, deep enough where players are often unseen from green level view, and its severity in height leads many to hit their beached shot backwards.

With this reputation, Hell Bunker needs to be at the height of its powers for the Open. As such, the R&A decided to renovate the trap to fix a drainage issue. The undertaking for such a task is breathtaking:
