Jason Day has had his hands full during golf's off-season -- just not with golf clubs.
Day's wife, Ellie, had the couple's second child in November (about a month before LeBron James sent her back to the hospital), causing him to miss the Hero World Challenge. And with no other events on his calendar, that meant nearly a three-month layoff between the last time he played competitively (the Presidents Cup) and when he'll tee it up on Thursday at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions at Kapalua.
That much time off is an aberration in these days of the PGA Tour's wrap-around schedule and never-ending appearance fees all over the world. What's even crazier is the lack of practice golf the Day says he's gotten in during that time.
Just four holes of golf in three months for the World No. 2? He's had more front-row tickets to sporting events during that span.
In any matter, Day, who has won four of his last nine PGA Tour events, has set up the narrative for this week. If he plays poorly, he's just rusty. And if he plays well, he's just really, really good.
